The vine used to construct this all natural design, called "vignes d' eau" or water-vine, only grows in mountain jungles on remote islands in the South Pacific. It is difficult to reach and challenging to harvest, but once reaped, grows back quickly, leaving no damage in these ecologically-sensitive forests. At a mere 3 millimeters in diameter-barely one-fourth as thick as typical rattan- the water-vine is time consuming to weave but yields a substantially more durable, heat resistant and elegant product. Artisans weave and finish these designs entirely by hand. Earnings from weaving help lift your craftsman and his or her family out of subsistence living, and provide them with better food, healthcare, and transportation. Calaisio is committed to investing a substantial amount if its profits back into these villages to further improve education and sanitation.
